HOW TO MAKE YOUR LOVED ONE FEEL MORE AT HOME IN A MEMORY CARE COMMUNITY
While this is not always the case, the decision and process to move your loved one into a memory care community can be a challenging one. We work hard to make this process as smooth as possible for every one of our residents and their families. Many families want to know how they can make their loved one more comfortable in their new home.
BAYVIEW SENIOR LIFESTYLE: BEAUTIFUL AND CALMING SPACES
At Bay View Assisted Living (and at our sister locations, Mesa View Senior Assisted Living and Harbor View Senior Assisted Living) we care about the physical environment that surrounds the members of our elder care communities. Research shows that aesthetics have a genuine impact on joy (check out the book Joyful: The Surprising Power of Ordinary Things to Create Extraordinary Happiness by Ingrid Fetell Lee to learn more about this). We work hard to maintain beautiful and calming spaces for our residents, all part of the BayView lifestyle!
MAKE YOUR ASSISTED LIVING COMMUNITY FEEL MORE “HOMEY”
All of us can probably conjure up the image of our childhood home. What is it about the space that feels like home to you? Maybe it’s family pictures that line the wall in the hallway. Maybe it’s your great grandma’s hutch that’s been in the family for decades. Maybe it’s the memories of good conversations around shared meals. These are memories no one wants to lose!
How can you bring these feelings of safety, security and comfort to your loved ones when they move to an Alzheimer’s care community? It’s important to create as comfortable of an atmosphere as possible, especially when these moves often involve difficult decisions, emotional conversations and circumstances that are less than ideal.
Our assisted living and independent living community is beautifully and thoughtfully designed and decorated. Our residents and their families often comment on how beautiful and serene the grounds and rooms at BayView are. We love hearing this feedback! Even though we’ve created inviting spaces, bringing in meaningful personal touches is important.
HOLISTIC ELDER CARE
Filling your loved one’s room with family pictures can be very meaningful. Some families might want to bring in a few decorative items from their loved one’s previous home to give them a sense of continuity. Books or art pieces can conjure up a feeling of home for some residents. Plush rugs, soft pillows and cozy blankets can also evoke a sense of comfort.
We’re committed to holistic senior living as we understand that the physical, social and spiritual aspects of our residents’ lives are all very important. Our loved ones with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia might not grasp the full concept of where they are living, but these little touches can make a bigger difference than we might realize. When someone with dementia moves to a new space, the differences are noticed and felt somewhere in the body. It might be akin to a missing lyric that we might not be able to put our finger on, but we know it’s gone.
