The 3 Most Festive Dessert & Drink Pairings (#3 Might Surprise You!)

Whether you’re celebrating the upcoming holidays with family at home, friends, or with loved ones at an assisted living community, coming up with a menu for holiday meals each year can be overwhelming. Most of us have tried and true recipes or dishes that have even become part of family traditions. It can be fun, however, to throw in the occasional new recipe, especially if it’s a fun cocktail or sweet treat. We’ve rounded up a few pairings of drinks and desserts that are sure to help you dazzle your guests for the holidays without too much fuss.

If you’ve been following our series on the MIND diet for Alzheimer’s and dementia prevention, our third pairing, a low sugar dessert with a mocktail, is just for you!

  1. Spiked Eggnog with Chocolate Sour Cream Cake

If you want to go the extra mile, you could make your eggnog from scratch, but, let’s be honest, who has time for that?!

Drink: Mix your favorite eggnog with your favorite bourbon or rum at a ratio of about 5:1. If you’re mixing a pitcher, stir a one quart carton of eggnog with about 4.5 shots of liquor. Dust with nutmeg and finish with a dollop of whipped cream.

Dessert: Though it’s a labor of love to bake a cake from scratch, this boozy chocolate cake with sour cream frosting has just the right amount of indulgence for the holidays. If you’re short on time, you could always make a boxed chocolate cake, soak it with the Grand Marnier, and still whip up that delicious sour cream frosting.

  1. Holiday Kentucky Mules with Ginger Cookies

Drink: To make a pitcher of festive Kentucky Mules that serves 6, combine 24 oz. ginger beer, 9 oz. bourbon and 3 oz. unsweetened cranberry juice in a pitcher. Pour over finely crushed ice in mule glasses and garnish with limes and fresh cranberries.

Dessert: Pair this gingery drink with Ina Garten’s ultimate ginger cookies for a winning holiday combo. Spiced with cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and, of course, ginger, these delicious cookies are sure to help you feel the warmth of the holidays.

  1. Pomegranate Sparkler with Low-Carb Fruit Tart

This drink and dessert pairing is fruity, festive, and healthy to boot!

Drink: Pour 1 tbls of pomegranate seeds into a champagne flute. Add ½ cup chilled pink lemonade (Trader Joe’s Low-Calorie Pink Lemonade is a great low sugar option!), ¼ cup sparkling water, and a splash of pomegranate juice. Garnish with lime and mint leaves.

Dessert: Not only is this recipe highly rated, it’s also low-carb, low-sugar, gluten free, and dairy free. Basically, if you’re looking for a light, healthy alternative to your typical holiday treat (and especially if you’re following the MIND diet for Alzheimer’s prevention), this fresh fruit tart might be just what you need.
