Researchers and physicians agree that sitting for long hours even if someone has a relatively active lifestyle can have a negative impact on people’s health.
The great news is that there are many ways to combat or at least mediate the negative effects of sitting for long periods. On our sister site RanchView Senior Assisted Living’s blog this month, we discussed ways to combat the negative effects of prolonged sitting including having walking meetings (especially for virtual meetings!), getting in a cardio burst by briskly taking the stairs, using voice dictation software to “write” while you walk, and taking three, five to fifteen-minute wellness walk breaks throughout the day. Below are some additional ideas for incorporating movement breaks into your day.
And, of course, bonus points if you can bike or walk to work! This starts your day on the right foot with improved circulation, mental clarity, and a boost to your overall well-being.
Take More Mini Movement Breaks!
Treadmill at Your Desk
Several popular walking pads can fit under a desk and be folded up for easy storage. This is a great way to kill two birds with one stone, and many individuals report clarity of mind while walking.
Three 10s!
Take five minutes for a mini-movement break within the four walls of your office. Warm up by walking and moving your limbs for a minute, then do ten push-ups, squats, and jumping jacks (or step-outs if jumping isn’t your jam).
Stairs and Longer Routes
This is pretty self-explanatory and a suggestion that has been around for decades. Whenever possible, take the stairs instead of the elevator. Intentionally incorporate stairs into any routes you need to take during your workday, whether you’re using the restroom or getting to the cafeteria for lunch. These small moments of intentional, extra movement can make a profound difference over a lifetime.
